FMSA Student Selected as National Finalist

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -- Marissa Stacholy, an eighth-grade student at First Montessori School of Atlanta and the daughter of Lisa and Jan Stacholy of Dunwoody, has been chosen as a national finalist in the River of Words Poetry & Art Contest. Sponsored by the Center for Environmental Literacy at Saint Mary's College of California, the contest is the largest international youth poetry and art competition in the world.

The judging panel, which included former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Hass, selected less than 100 poems and pieces of art from tens of thousands of entries.

Marissa will receive a medal, and her poetry will be included in the ROW's anthology. A copy of the book will be donated in her name to First Montessori School of Atlanta and her public library branch.

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -- Beginning in May, Ray’s on the River will host an intimate, three-part jazz concert series to benefit local charities. The concerts will be held at Ray’s on the River’s manicured Event Lawn that overlooks the Chattahoochee River.

“We’re really excited to host such renowned jazz musicians and to be able to partner with such worthy causes,” said Mike Ross, director of operations for Ray’s Restaurants. “As an Atlanta restaurant group, we feel we have a great responsibility to give back to our local community. The Chattahoochee River is the perfect setting to enjoy an afternoon of live music and great food with friends and family.”

70th anniversary of Casablanca comes to local movie theatres

 

A cinematic treasure returns to movie theaters this month with the Turner Classic Movies Presents Casablanca 70th Anniversary Event on Wednesday, March 21 at 7:00 pm local time and special matinees in select theaters. Audiences in more than 450 movie theaters nationwide will be able to experience the time-honored classic in a stunning digital presentation by NCM Fathom Events, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and Warner Home Video.  The event will be introduced by TCM host Robert Osborne who will discuss Casablanca’s enduring legacy and reveal some of its fascinating behind-the-scenes stories.

The Atlanta Opera is Looking for Singers for the 24-Hour Opera Project!

 

What:             

Opera singers from all over may apply to compete in the second annual 24-Hour Opera Project on January 20 and 21, 2012. Apply online at atlantaopera.org.

Selected singers will join composers, lyricists, and stage directors, who will be randomly put into teams, and will have 24-hours to compose, stage and rehearse a 10-minute opera, to be performed as part of a showcase on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 7pm. Compositions and performances will be judged by a panel of judges, and by the public, tuning in via live webcast. Prizes will be awarded to the judge’s choice and audience favorite. No travel, housing or per diem provided.
