Atlanta-Fulton Public Library system to create time capsule

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta-Fulton Public is asking for help in making a time capsule over the summer. 

The time capsule will be for the Perry Holmes Library on Bolton Rad. The library team wants to open the time capsule as it moves to a new location in February 2015. 

As part of the time capsule, the library staff asks for Atlanta and Fulton County residents to give small items, those that can be parted with for around two years. Those donations are due August 1, and the capsule will close the next day. All ages can participate.

Fulton County Health Services encourages residents to learn their status on National HIV Testing Day

ATLANTA -- The Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness will recognize National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) on Friday, June 27 by offering free HIV/STI testing and counseling at three locations.

The NHTD is an annual campaign to encourage all individuals to “Take the Test Take Control” in order to know their HIV status.  Knowing your status helps to keep you, your family and your community safe from sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV.

Free and confidential HIV/STI testing is available at the following locations:

Springmont School employee selected for Leadership Sandy Springs

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -- Ernestine Morgan, admission coordinator for The Springmont School, has been selected to participate in the 2014 Leadership Sandy Springs class.

Leadership Sandy Springs is a non-profit organization that provides participants an opportunity to learn more about the community and the issues facing it. Speakers and activities help class members develop their leadership skills. As part of the program, Morgan will lend her time and skills to various community projects.

Morgan became interested in Leadership Sandy Springs while participating in the Citizen's Police Academy, which is sponsored by the Sandy Springs Police Department.

"With Springmont School having served this community for 50 years, I can't think of a better way to build a stronger partnership with families, city personnel and our school," Ernestine Morgan said.

How do you expose urban youth to Georgia’s agriculture? You open a Pizza Farm!

The Cooperative Extension Metro Collaborative of Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Cobb and Clayton counties have invited 4th and 5th grade students to visit Pizza Farm 2013 on May 8 and 9, 2013 at the State Farmers Market Exhibit Hall located in Forest Park, GA. Attendees will learn how dairy, vegetables, grains and meats come together to make the perfect pizza, as well as about good health and nutrition. 

“We are excited about the Pizza Farm!” states Menia Chester, Director of Fulton County Cooperative Extension. “Many children think their food comes from the grocery store.  The Pizza Farm will teach them that every pizza starts at the farm.”

Exhibits on the origins of pizza ingredients will be presented in a circuit of stations set up around the State Farmers Market Exhibit Hall.

ATLANTA -- Lack of self-worth and self-esteem in teens and adolescents is a dangerous epidemic that constitutes as a gateway for many problematic behaviors and actions in their lives such as teen pregnancy STD's, abuse and unhealthy relationships, eating disorders and suicide.  The self esteem of a young girl peaks at the age of 9, and by the age of 12-13, has decreased by more than 56%.

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. --On Feb. 27, Holy Innocents' Episcopal School senior Robert Moore will begin the third chapter of his shoe drive initiative, Kicks for Kids.

Moore, who was featured on WXIA-11Alive's Random Acts of Kindness segment and also named a Top 20 Under 20 student in Metro Atlanta by both "Atlanta INtown" and 21st Century Leaders, feels strongly about community service and believes shoe drives are an effective, simple, and important way to make a difference in developing or war-torn countries. As founder and organizer of Kicks for Kids, he ran a Metro Atlanta shoe drive in 2011 that netted more than 500 pairs of shoes that were distributed to wounded children and teens at a combat support hospital in Afghanistan.
