ATLANTA -- Country music legend Loretta Lynn will perform at Chastain Park Amphitheater on Friday, Aug. 24.

Doors open at 7 p.m., with the music scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.

Lynn has more than 50 years of experience in the music industry and has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy. She will perform with special guest Sonia Leigh.

Tickets range in price from $25 for the rear terrace and lawn to $234 for a six-seat terrace table.

Gov. Deal swears in Ga. Supreme Court justice

ATLANTA (AP) - Gov. Nathan Deal has sworn in the newest justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia.

Georgia Court of Appeals Judge Keith Blackwell was sworn in Thursday morning in the House Chamber of the State Capitol.

Deal last month appointed the 37-year-old Blackwell to fill a vacancy left by Chief Justice George Carley. Carley's resignation as chief justice was effective Tuesday.

Blackwell had served on the Court of Appeals since he was appointed in 2010 by former Gov. Sonny Perdue. He is the 92nd justice since the court's creation in 1845.

Blackwell previously practiced civil and criminal law. He will serve on the court until 2014, when voters will decide whether to keep him on the bench for a six-year term.

FMSA Student Selected as National Finalist

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -- Marissa Stacholy, an eighth-grade student at First Montessori School of Atlanta and the daughter of Lisa and Jan Stacholy of Dunwoody, has been chosen as a national finalist in the River of Words Poetry & Art Contest. Sponsored by the Center for Environmental Literacy at Saint Mary's College of California, the contest is the largest international youth poetry and art competition in the world.

The judging panel, which included former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Hass, selected less than 100 poems and pieces of art from tens of thousands of entries.

Marissa will receive a medal, and her poetry will be included in the ROW's anthology. A copy of the book will be donated in her name to First Montessori School of Atlanta and her public library branch.

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -- Beginning in May, Ray’s on the River will host an intimate, three-part jazz concert series to benefit local charities. The concerts will be held at Ray’s on the River’s manicured Event Lawn that overlooks the Chattahoochee River.

“We’re really excited to host such renowned jazz musicians and to be able to partner with such worthy causes,” said Mike Ross, director of operations for Ray’s Restaurants. “As an Atlanta restaurant group, we feel we have a great responsibility to give back to our local community.
