Willy's famous Chicken Tortilla Soup is back

Willy's famous Chicken Tortilla Soup is back

ATLANTA -- It's getting cold outside, but it'll be warm in Willy's Mexicana Grill restaurants all winter, now that the famous Chicken Tortilla Soup is back on the menu.

The soup is made from scratch daily and features corn, garlic, jalapeños, onions, tomato purée, chicken broth, spices and white corn tortillas; the tortillas make the soup thick and creamy, meaning that there is no need to add cream to it.

A bowl of soup costs $4.50. The popular recipe will be served through the spring of 2012.

LOCAL PROFILE: The Pie Shop

ATLANTA -- Mims Bledsoe, the owner of The Pie Shop, has been baking since she was a child and she recently opened the shop to showcase her skills.

The former University of Georgia masters candidate left school to realize her passion of artisan baking and providing a “slice of happiness” for those who wish to have one.

Bledsoe says she took up baking because it “requires skill and is very feminine”. The theme of her shop is also very feminine; she chose a peach colored storefront to pay homage to Georgia Peaches and the bold black and white lettering as an ode to Coco Chanel, a designer revered by many old guard Southern Belles.

The Pie Shop is quintessentially southern and the pies are absolutely splendid. Check her out at 3210E Roswell Road in Atlanta.

Coca-Cola Freestyle coming to Five Guys

Coca-Cola Freestyle coming to Five Guys

ATLANTA -- Five Guys has become the largest restaurant chain to sign up for the Coca-Cola Freestyle dispenser system.

The burger chain will begin installing two Coca-Cola Freestyle fountains in all company-owned restaurant locations across the country next month.

Five Guys has about 875 restaurants across the United States and Canada. It began testing Coke's Freestyle system in the Atlanta market, home to 24 of its restaurant locations, in 2010.

The touch screen-operated Freestyle lets consumers create their own personal and customized drinks, dispensing more than 100 sparkling and still beverage brands from one machine.

Firehouse Subs also recently adopted the Freestyle for its restaurants.

Subway celebrates 500th Metro Atlanta store

Subway celebrates 500th Metro Atlanta store

ATLANTA -- With the arrival of several new stores this month, Subway celebrates the opening of more than 500 stores in Metro Atlanta since its first location in 1977.

This milestone is a testament to the Subway brand and the franchisees who have made it so successful in the Atlanta area -- not to mention the world, as Subway is the planet's largest restaurant chain with over 34,000 locations.

"We continue to offer a dining experience that meets the changing tastes and needs of our loyal patrons, so it is no surprise to see this important achievement," said Christi Estis, director of operations for Subway Development of Atlanta. "We could not have reached this milestone without the dedication of our model franchisees and employees.

Original Havana Sandwich Shop in $20

Original Havana Sandwich Shop in $20

ATLANTA – After the original Havana Sandwich shop was “completely gutted” by fire in 2008, two Havana Sandwich shops opened in the general vicinity of the “original” both claiming the title.

Over the years, there has been much debate about which shop deserved the title of the original, but for many, Havana Restaurant at 3979 Buford Highway in Atlanta retains the crown. Considered one of Atlanta’s iconic restaurant survivors along with the Varsity, The Collanade and the recently closed Pano’s and Paul’s, Havana has been serving up sandwiches and Cuban fare for 35 years.

Eddie Benedit Sr. and his wife, Debbie, opened the restaurant in 1976, only a couple of years after he came to the United States from Cuba. Eddie was always very conscious of the restaurant’s quality, consistency and affordability, and prices reflect that.
